A native doctor, Anagbo Emeka, has shocked residents of Anambra State after confessing to buying used condoms from prostitutes for the preparation of charms.
Emeka, who hails from Umugbo in Ayamelum Local Government Area, was apprehended by local youths in Echara community, Awka North LGA, following reports of his suspicious activities.
In a video circulating on social media, shared by community leader Dr. Uche Nworah, the native doctor admitted that he entered into an agreement with a commercial sex worker to supply him with used male condoms collected from brothels.
“I agreed with her to sell me used condoms. She delivered them, but later reported me. That is the wrong thing I did,” Emeka confessed.
He explained that the condoms were meant for the preparation of spiritual charms, which, according to him, are used in handling land disputes, conflicts, and even police cases.
The revelation has triggered outrage and concern among residents, with many questioning the health implications of such practices. While the youths who caught him handed him over to local authorities, it remains unclear whether formal charges have been filed or if the state police have begun investigations.
Speaking on the incident, a public health expert in Awka, Dr. Ifeanyi Okoye, warned that the handling and reuse of contaminated materials such as used condoms pose “serious risks of spreading infections, including HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.” He stressed that such practices should be “condemned outrightly and discouraged by community leaders.”
Similarly, a security analyst, Chukwuma Eze, called for stricter monitoring of the activities of traditional practitioners across the state.
“What we are seeing is not just a cultural issue, but a matter of public safety. Authorities must step in to regulate and check these excesses before they escalate,” he said.
