Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday, intercepted a 22-year-old British national, Campell Kaizra Kofi Johannes Slifer, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
Slifer was attempting to smuggle 37.6kg of cannabis, known as Loud, into Nigeria, hidden in two suitcases. The suspect, who had previously been convicted for drug trafficking and robbery in the United Kingdom, was reportedly recruited to transport the illicit consignment from Thailand via Doha.
Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday, stating that Slifer had been under surveillance after intelligence reports led officers to his flight.
He added that Slifer was traveling on Qatar Airways when he was apprehended by NDLEA operatives, who discovered the drugs concealed in his luggage.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation, NDLEA officers raided a hideout in Kano on May 10, recovering 775 litres of codeine syrup. Two suspects, Hafizu Isa Uman, 34, and Ismail Shehu, 48, were arrested in connection with the seizure. The codeine syrup, concealed in 31 kegs, was stored at a location in the Rijiyar Zaki area.
Babafemi praised the efforts of the agency’s operatives across the country, particularly the Lagos, Kano, and Niger Commands, for their success in intercepting large drug consignments.
He highlighted the agency’s continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring a safer Nigeria.
The British national’s arrest and the massive codeine haul come as part of a broader, ongoing operation targeting international drug trafficking rings operating in Nigeria.
NDLEA operatives have been working relentlessly to intercept drug shipments at key entry points across the country, including Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt.
In addition to these recent busts, the agency also intercepted a large consignment of skunk, a strain of cannabis, in Niger State, where 3,047kg was seized from a fuel tanker and three vehicles on 7th May 2025.
NDLEA continues to dismantle international drug trafficking networks with these significant seizures, reinforcing its efforts in the ongoing War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign.
Brigadier General Mohamed Marwa (retd), Chairman and CEO of NDLEA, commended the officers for their dedication and praised the ongoing national efforts to reduce both drug supply and demand.
