Nigeria has once again been listed among the world’s 36 most corrupt countries, according to the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International on Tuesday.
The global index, which evaluates perceptions of public-sector corruption, covered 182 countries and territories, using a 0–100 scoring system, where lower scores reflect higher levels of corruption.
Nigeria scored 26 points in the latest assessment, the same as last year, but dropped two places to 142nd position globally, from 140th previously.
Despite the slip in global ranking, Nigeria still holds its position as one of the 36 most corrupt countries, a spot it shares with Cameroon, Guatemala, Guinea, Kyrgyzstan, and Papua New Guinea.
Transparency International noted that countries near the bottom of the index face persistent challenges, including weak institutions, poor enforcement of anti-corruption laws, and limited accountability.
At the top of the global index, Denmark leads as the least corrupt country, followed by Finland, Singapore, and New Zealand, highlighting the wide gap between nations with strong governance and those struggling with entrenched corruption.
The CPI remains a key benchmark for transparency, public trust, and investor confidence worldwide.
In the days ahead, stakeholders are expected to share opinions on how Nigeria can effectively tackle corruption and improve its ranking in future global assessments.
