The Obitient Movement, a nationwide political group loyal to Labour Party’s 2023, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded to comments made by Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, asserting that Nigeria is a collective heritage that belongs to all citizens.
Governor Okpebholo had stirred controversy after a video surfaced online showing him warning Peter Obi against visiting Edo State without first informing the state government.
In the video, the Governor was seen saying,
“I heard Peter Obi was in Edo. That wouldn’t be tolerated again. He must not step into Edo without telling me. If he decides to come to Edo without telling me, his security will not be guaranteed. Whatever he sees, let him take” the fuming Governor declared.”
The remarks have sparked backlash, particularly from the Obidient Movement, which described the statement as undemocratic, divisive, and an affront to the principles of freedom of movement and association enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
The group emphasized its inclusive and non-ethnic ideology, adding that no part of Nigeria is the exclusive territory of any individual or political party.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. No one has a monopoly over any part of the country. The OBIdient Movement is a nationwide force that cuts across tribes, religions, and regions. We stand for justice, fairness, and progress for every Nigerian,” the statement read.
The movement further noted that Peter Obi, as a law-abiding Nigerian citizen and national political leader, does not require permission from any state Governor to move freely within the country.
“We reject every attempt to regionalize or tribalise a movement that is clearly built on shared aspirations for a better Nigeria. We are not defined by ethnicity or geography but by a commitment to nation-building,” the statement added.
Since the 2023 general elections, the OBIdient Movement has continued to expand its grassroots support base, with members actively involved in civic education, voter awareness, and advocacy for good governance across Nigeria.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency, and democratic values, urging political leaders to embrace dialogue over intimidation.
The latest exchange between Governor Okpebholo and the OBIdient Movement underscores the ongoing friction between established political actors and emerging forces driven largely by youth activism and reformist ideals.
