Nigeria, Benin Strengthen Ties with Integration Pact

In a step aimed at deepening ties and strengthening stronger regional cooperation, Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have signed a bilateral integration agreement, setting a powerful precedent for enhanced collaboration across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The agreement was formalized on Saturday during the 2025 West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
“In a defining moment for West Africa, Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have signed a landmark bilateral integration agreement to deepen cooperation and accelerate regional reforms,” a statement from the Nigerian presidency declared, highlighting the strategic importance of the accord.
Signing on behalf of Nigeria were Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, and Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Representing Benin were Shadiya Alimatou Assouman, Minister of Industry and Trade, and Shegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. This joint signing indicates a shared commitment to fostering a more integrated and resilient West African region.
The signing ceremony, witnessed by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Benin Republic President Patrice Talon, symbolizes the dawn of a new era of unity and shared prosperity within ECOWAS.
Addressing attendees at the summit, President Tinubu emphasized the critical need for coordinated efforts among West African nations. He stated that such collaboration is essential for the region to achieve global economic relevance and unlock its full potential on the international stage.
