In a decisive move to enhance security in the country, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the immediate reactivation of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system nationwide.
The revamped process will leverage a secure and user-friendly digital platform accessible at possap.gov.ng.
This significant initiative directly addresses widespread public concerns regarding the unwarranted harassment of motorists with factory-fitted tinted windows.
Recognizing the increasing prevalence of tinted glass in modern vehicles, the Force has implemented a transparent and accountable digital system to legitimize their use by law-abiding citizens while simultaneously bolstering public safety.
The move further underscores the critical role this reactivation plays in mitigating criminal activities. Historically, tinted vehicles have been exploited by criminal elements involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, “one-chance” schemes, and other forms of banditry.
The reduced visibility afforded by tinted windows obstructs effective law enforcement and contributes to an environment of insecurity. By reintroducing the permit system, the NPF aims to differentiate between legitimate users, such as individuals with medical needs or members of the security community, and those who might exploit tinted windows for illicit purposes.
According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejombi, Force Public Relations Officer, “This strategic measure is anticipated to significantly enhance police investigative capabilities and contribute to broader national security objectives. The newly activated digital platform offers a seamless application process. Applicants can now conveniently process their permits online, benefiting from integrated identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN).
“The system also incorporates biometric capture and mandatory background checks to ensure the integrity of the permit issuance. Successful applicants will receive QR-coded digital permits, with a remarkably efficient processing timeline of just 72 hours.
“To facilitate a smooth transition and ensure public awareness, a 30-day grace period has been officially approved, commencing on May 1st, 2025. During this period, motorists are strongly encouraged to comply with the new directive and obtain the necessary permits.
Enforcement will rigorously commence at the expiration of this grace period. The Inspector-General of Police has issued a stern warning that any police officer found engaging in unprofessional conduct, including extortion or harassment, during the enforcement process will face decisive disciplinary action in accordance with established regulations.”
He also reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to adopting a technologically driven and citizen-centric approach to policing.
He passionately urged the public to actively embrace this initiative, emphasizing its pivotal role in fostering safer roads, enhancing public trust, and collectively building a more secure Nigeria for all.
