No heroes anymore in Nigeria, says Chimamanda at NBA conference

Renowned novelist, Chimamanda Adichie sounded despondent on Monday on the state of the Nigerian nation.
She said the most populous black nation was in disarray.

The author of “Purple Hibiscus” stated this on Monday while delivering the keynote speech at the ongoing Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos.

She said, “Nigeria is in disarray. Things are hard and getting harder by the day. We can’t be safe when there is no rule of law. Nigerians are starved of heroes to look up to. Late Dora Akunyili and Gani Gawehinmi were heroes that Nigerians looked up to before now.

“Unfortunately that era has gone. I believe that NBA is in a position to give the nation heroes that we can look up to to lead the nation.”

Other personalities at the conference included former Vice-president and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki; Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong; Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Alogba Kazeem; and past presidents of the NBA.
