The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has mourned the death of its former General Manager and Chief Executive, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, describing the late elder statesman and businessman as a pillar of trade facilitation and an inspiration to many.
Tukur died on Saturday, 2026, at the age of 90.
The NPA Managing Director, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, expressed the authority’s condolences to the deceased’s family, the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the people of Adamawa State.
Dantsoho, who joined the Adamawa State Governor to receive the remains of the late businessman, said Tukur’s death represented a loss to the nation and the international trade community.
“I will like to on behalf of the entire Management and Staff of the NPA express our profound condolences and deepest sympathies to his immediate family, the Federal Republic of Nigeria and indeed the good people of Adamawa State on the demise of a pillar of trade facilitation and an inspiration to many,” he said.
The NPA, in a statement signed by its General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Ikechukwu Onyemekara, recalled that Tukur served as the authority’s General Manager and Chief Executive between 1975 and 1982.
During his tenure, Tukur was part of the leadership of the agency responsible for managing Nigeria’s ports and facilitating maritime trade at a period when the country’s port system played a critical role in its expanding economy.
Beyond his public service, Tukur was a prominent businessman and elder statesman whose career spanned business, public administration and international affairs.
The NPA said his contributions to trade facilitation and national development would remain part of his enduring legacy, while extending its sympathies to his family and the people of Adamawa State.
