Ondo Govt. Announces Plans To Boost Food Production

by Our Reporter

The Ondo State Government says it plans to boost food production by encouraging multiple combination of different crops during cultivation.

Mr Babasola Adeniyan, the Crop and Land Use Facilitator of the National Programme for Food Security (NPFS), announced this at a workshop on Tuesday in Akure.

The workshop was organised for NPFS farmers on crop production in nine locations in the state.

Adeniyan said that the government would give loans to farmers to upgrade their knowledge on the use of modern farming methods.

“The training is to assist the farmer in achieving higher profit in their crop production activities and to improve farming techniques.

“It may also maximise the crop yield per hectare and crop combination, which is the focus of training today.

“We are training our farmers to combine several crops on the field rather sticking to mono crop,’’ he said.

Mr Adetunji Ademola, a soil scientist with the state Agricultural Development Project (ADP), said the farmers were being trained to plant improved varieties of crop.

According to him, participants were also mentored on how to find planting materials from reliable sources. (NAN)
