Doha-based humanitarian organisation, Qatar Charity, is expanding its operations in Nigeria with an enlarged field office in Abuja and an ongoing $10 million integrated housing project aimed at addressing the social and welfare needs of communities in the Federal Capital Territory.
The organisation’s expanded activities were highlighted during a courtesy visit by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to Qatar Charity’s headquarters in Doha, where he held discussions with the organisation’s Executive Vice President and Global Programs Officer, Nawaf Abdullah Al-Hammadi.
The meeting focused on strengthening Qatar Charity’s long-term development interventions in Nigeria, with emphasis on sustainable projects designed to address multiple community needs rather than providing short-term relief.
At the centre of the organisation’s activities is the Gaduwa housing development in Abuja, an integrated project valued at $10 million.
The development combines residential units with essential social infrastructure, including a health clinic and school, reflecting an approach that links access to housing with basic healthcare and education.
Welcoming the initiative, Yakubu said the Nigerian Embassy was committed to supporting Qatar Charity’s operations and facilitating the necessary diplomatic clearances and inter-agency coordination.
“Qatar Charity has demonstrated a genuine and practical commitment to the well-being of Nigerian communities,” Yakubu said.
“Housing alone is not enough; access to basic healthcare and education must go hand in hand. We see this partnership as contributing not only to development outcomes on the ground but also to the wider framework of Qatar-Nigeria relations.”
The ambassador said the cooperation could provide a basis for extending the integrated development model to other parts of Nigeria, subject to coordination with relevant government authorities and stakeholders.
Qatar Charity’s expanded operations come as Nigeria and Qatar continue to strengthen cooperation in development and humanitarian affairs, with international partnerships supporting interventions in areas including housing, healthcare, education and community welfare.
The Abuja project reflects Qatar Charity’s approach of combining housing with essential social services to improve the overall wellbeing of beneficiaries.
The Gaduwa development is expected to demonstrate how housing projects can be integrated with healthcare and education facilities to address interconnected social needs.
The expansion of Qatar Charity’s operations in Abuja could also provide a platform for additional development initiatives in other parts of Nigeria, potentially broadening the organisation’s contribution to community development and social welfare.
The initiative further adds a practical dimension to Nigeria-Qatar relations, as both countries seek to deepen cooperation beyond diplomatic engagement through projects with direct social and economic benefits for communities.
