The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned Governors Hyacinth Alia of Benue State and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, along with their respective Houses of Assembly, to appear before it on Thursday, March 8.
This development follows a petition submitted by a civil society group, the Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, which called on the National Assembly to assume the legislative responsibilities of the two state assemblies.
The summons was announced in a statement released on Friday by Chooks Oko, Head of Media for the committee.
The statement noted that the directive, endorsed by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Mike Etaba, was issued to give both the executive and legislative arms of the affected states an opportunity to present their positions.
Etaba emphasized the committee’s commitment to constitutional order, saying: “Our duty is to ensure that the principles of the rule of law are maintained. This hearing offers the concerned parties a platform to explain their actions before the Nigerian people. There will be no room for chaos in our democracy.”
