Founder of Power City International Ministry, Pastor Abel Damina, has declared that splitting household bills equally between husband and wife is not in line with Biblical teachings.
Speaking to his congregation, Damina stressed that men are mandated by scripture to take full responsibility for providing for their families. While admitting that a 50/50 financial arrangement may seem convenient in today’s economy, he maintained that it is unscriptural.
According to him, a wife’s financial support should be voluntary and not an expectation or a fixed part of the family’s budget.
“It is not biblical for a man to share the bills with his wife. The man should bear the financial burden of the home. If the wife chooses to help, it should be by choice, not compulsion,” Damina said.
His stance has stirred debate among Christians and social commentators. Critics argue that economic realities, such as job losses or situations where the wife earns more, require flexibility. They point to the Biblical concept of a “helpmate” as suggesting mutual support, not rigid financial roles.
Others warn that enforcing the principle as a fixed rule could pile more pressure on men, embolden some women to adopt the mindset of “my money is mine, your money is ours,” and fuel tension in marriages.
Some others however, believe the injunction reflects God’s design for the man to lead and provide, insisting that any deviation risks undermining the structure of the home.
With opinions sharply divided, the conversation reflects a larger struggle between traditional interpretations of Scripture and the evolving realities of modern family life. This debate may continue for a long time.
