Supreme Court hears Saraki’s appeal Thursday

by Our Reporter

The Supreme Court has fixed Thursday for hearing on the appeal filed by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki over alleged declaration of asset.

The decision was contained in hearing notice sent to parties in the case.

Saraki is challenging the Code of Conduct Tribunal’s (CCT) jurisdiction over the 13-count charges against him, bordering on alleged false asset declaration.

The Court of Appeal, in a split decision of two-to-one uphead the CCT’s jurisdiction to hear the charges, a decision Saraki appealed at the Supreme Court.

Further to this, the Apex Court directed the CCT to suspend proceedings in the trial pending determination of the appeal.

A five-man bench of the Court, led by Justice John Fabiyi gave the directive, following an undertaking by the prosecution lawyer, Rotimi Jacob (SAN), to the effect that since the court has assured on accelerated hearing in the appeal, he will prevail on the CCT not to proceed with the trial until the apex court’s pronouncement.
