A devastating flood triggered by a torrential downpour has claimed the life of a commercial motorcyclist and left a trail of destruction in Igarra, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The flooding destroyed at least 20 houses, submerged roads, businesses and farmlands, and displaced several residents after hours of heavy rainfall overwhelmed the community.
The deceased, identified simply as Uche, was reportedly travelling on his motorcycle from Somorika to Igarra when he was caught in the raging floodwaters and swept away. Following an intensive search by residents, his body was recovered two days later.
Among the worst-hit areas were Iretutu Axis, Pope Francis Road, Okpe Road, Market Road and Rest House Road, where floodwaters inundated homes, shops and public infrastructure, forcing many families to flee to safety.
Residents said the deluge destroyed household property, food supplies and other valuables, while business owners and farmers suffered significant losses as shops and farmlands were submerged. The flood also washed open some family graves, highlighting the magnitude of the disaster.
Eyewitnesses blamed the severity of the flooding on the intensity of the rainfall, inadequate drainage infrastructure and blocked waterways. They urged government authorities to address the perennial flooding that has become a recurring challenge in the area.
Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Tajudeen Alade, who visited the affected communities to assess the damage, described the incident as tragic and confirmed that the council had alerted the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EDOSEMA) to facilitate urgent relief for victims.
“We have assessed the extent of the damage caused by the flood, and the situation is indeed heartbreaking. Sadly, we lost a resident to the disaster, while many families have been displaced and properties destroyed.
“We have formally notified the Edo State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant authorities to ensure that affected residents receive immediate assistance. We will continue to work with the state government to provide the necessary support.
“I also appeal to residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways during heavy rainfall. We must all take precautionary measures while government intensifies efforts to improve drainage infrastructure and prevent a recurrence of this kind of tragedy,” Alade said.
Despite the assurance, residents appealed to the Edo State Government to go beyond emergency relief by investing in durable drainage systems, clearing blocked waterways and implementing sustainable flood-control measures to prevent future disasters.
The latest flooding comes as many communities across Edo State continue to grapple with security challenges that have displaced residents from their homes and farmlands.
With homes, businesses and agricultural lands now devastated by the flood, many residents fear the humanitarian situation could deteriorate further unless urgent relief is provided and long-term solutions are implemented to address both recurring flooding and insecurity.
