Coach Eric Chelle’s impressive rise at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has thrust his future with the Super Eagles into the spotlight, amid reports that Tunisia are preparing a lucrative offer to lure the Nigerian head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to reports, the Tunisian Football Federation is ready to table a deal worth $100,000 per month for Chelle to take charge of the Carthage Eagles, a move that would see his salary doubled from his current reported earnings of $50,000 per month with Nigeria.
The Malian tactician, who was appointed Super Eagles head coach in December 2025 during a turbulent phase of Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign, has rapidly enhanced his reputation following a string of commanding performances at AFCON 2025.
His side’s standout moment so far includes a dominant quarterfinal victory over Algeria.
Despite having one year remaining on his contract with Nigeria, speculation over Chelle’s future has intensified, particularly amid reports that he is owed outstanding salaries by the Nigeria Football Federation.
Tunisia’s interest follows the dismissal of former head coach Sami Trabelsi after the team’s Round of 16 exit to Mali. The 2004 African champions were eliminated on penalties after conceding a late equaliser, despite playing most of the match with 10 men.
The Tunisian Football Federation later confirmed it had “decided to terminate the contractual relationship by mutual consent” with Trabelsi and his technical staff.
With Tunisia already qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the vacant role presents Chelle with an immediate opportunity to appear on football’s biggest stage. Other African nations, including Angola and Guinea, are also reportedly monitoring his situation, although Tunisia are believed to be leading the race.
Despite the growing speculation, Chelle has maintained that his focus remains firmly on Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign.
The Super Eagles are currently preparing for a high-stakes semifinal clash against hosts Morocco in Rabat, having gone unbeaten in the tournament. Nigeria have scored 14 goals without conceding in five matches, underlining the team’s cohesion and the tactical impact of Chelle’s stewardship.
As AFCON 2025 enters its decisive phase, attention will remain fixed on whether Chelle opts to extend his stay with Nigeria or accept a lucrative World Cup-bound offer from Tunisia.
