At least two persons have been confirmed dead following a road accident involving the convoy of renowned British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The accident occurred at Makun, near the Sagamu Interchange, on the Ibadan-bound axis of the busy highway.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command said the vehicle conveying Joshua collided with another vehicle under circumstances that are still being investigated.
Police spokesperson, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said the boxer sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention.
“The Ogun State Police Command confirms that world-renowned boxer, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident on Monday in Makun, Ogun State,” Oluseyi said.
She added, “The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated. He sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention.”
The police spokesperson disclosed that the crash claimed lives.
“Tragically, two other persons lost their lives at the scene of the accident. The deceased have been conveyed to the morgue, while investigations have commenced to determine the cause of the crash,” Oluseyi said.
Also reacting, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State said preliminary findings pointed to excessive speed.
An FRSC official explained that the vehicle reportedly lost control while overtaking another vehicle.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle was suspected to be travelling beyond the prescribed speed limit and lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre,” the road safety officer said.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.
