The rain of goodies has not stopped falling on some members of the victorious Super Falcons who recently clinched the Women African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown for a record 10th time, as Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has splashed a whopping ₦60 million and a new house on defender Tosin Demehin and two other officials from the state in recognition of their contribution to the historic feat.
At a civic reception held in Akure, the Governor gifted Demehin ₦30 million and a fully furnished house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile, while Mary Akinsola (team media officer) and Mary Oduboku (team secretary), both natives of Ondo State, received ₦15 million each.
Governor Aiyedatiwa described the gesture as a token of appreciation for the trio’s patriotism, hard work, and excellence during the  Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where Nigeria emerged champions after a dominant run.
“This is a historic moment, not just for Nigeria but for Ondo State. These women have brought pride to our state, and it is only right that we honour them in a fitting way,” the Governor stated.
Demehin, a standout performer in Nigeria’s defensive setup during the tournament, also registered her first senior international goal in the Falcons’ emphatic 5-0 quarter-final win over Zambia.
The 22-year-old, who started her career with Sunshine Queens FC, expressed deep appreciation for the recognition, saying the rewards would inspire her and other young girls across the state to strive for greatness.
“This is a dream come true. I’m thankful to the governor and the people of Ondo. This will encourage many young girls to believe in themselves,” she said.
The event marked the first time a Nigerian Governor has formally hosted and rewarded Super Falcons members from his state after a major international tournament, a move many have applauded as a bold statement in support of women’s football.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports and youth development, promising continued support for grassroots programmes and teams like Sunshine Stars and Sunshine Queens.
Meanwhile, reactions across the country have been mixed. While many Nigerians have applauded the recognition and financial rewards being lavished on the victorious Super Falcons, others have criticised the perceived imbalance in national priorities.
Critics argue that in a country where pensioners struggle to receive meagre and irregular stipends, and where security operatives, healthcare workers, and academic professionals are underpaid and often owed months of salaries, such extravagant gifts reflect deeper systemic inequalities.
For them, the largesse highlights the contrast between national celebrations and the grim realities faced by many public servants and retirees.
