The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has confirmed a recent meeting between himself, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and President Bola Tinubu aimed at resolving the political crisis in the state.
Wike said the meeting, held on Monday at the President’s instance, was part of efforts to broker peace between Governor Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
He commended Tinubu’s intervention and expressed hope that it would lead to lasting stability.
“I remember this is the second time the President is intervening, and by the grace of God this will be the last time,” Wike said after inspecting projects in Abuja.
“I have told the Assembly to do the needful and obey Mr President. I also believe the governor will play his part to ensure this is the final time Rivers people hear about this crisis.”
The meeting followed renewed tension between Fubara and lawmakers loyal to Wike, including the issuance of a third impeachment notice against the governor.
President Tinubu reportedly met behind closed doors with key Rivers political figures, including Wike and Fubara, in a fresh attempt to ease the prolonged power struggle in the oil-rich state.
After the meeting, Fubara was said to have accompanied Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja a gesture observers described as a possible sign of reconciliation.
However, it remains unclear whether the talks will lead to a lasting truce, as core issues in the dispute are yet to be publicly resolved, including the fate of the impeachment move against the governor.
