The Yobe State Hisbah Commission (YSHC) on Thursday intensified its crackdown on illicit alcohol sales by destroying 243 cartons of assorted alcoholic beverages in Damaturu, the state capital.

The public destruction exercise, led by the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Yahuza Hamza Abubakar, took place at Maina Lodge where the contraband was seized nearly three weeks ago.

According to the Commission, the seized items included various brands of prohibited drinks which were confiscated as part of its ongoing enforcement of the state’s ban on alcohol.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Abubakar reaffirmed the Hisbah Commission’s unwavering commitment to upholding the religious and legal prohibition of alcohol in Yobe State. He praised Governor Mai Mala Buni for his continued support in empowering the Commission to effectively carry out its duties, which include moral policing and enforcement of Sharia-compliant regulations.

“The sale, distribution, and consumption of alcohol remain completely prohibited in Yobe State in line with our religious values and state laws. We will not relent in our efforts to ensure strict compliance,” Dr. Abubakar stated.

In a related development, the Hisbah unit in Garin Alkali, Bursari Local Government Area, also destroyed an additional 17 cartons of alcohol, reinforcing the Commission’s operations beyond the state capital.

Dr. Abubakar called on residents across the state to partner with the Commission by reporting any violations of the alcohol ban or other immoral activities.

“you are our eyes and ears out there. We rely on your cooperation to ensure our communities remain safe, disciplined, and morally upright,” he emphasized.

Thursday’s destruction exercise is part of the Hisbah Commission’s sustained campaign to enforce moral discipline in accordance with Yobe’s religious and cultural values.

Incidents like these are very common in Northern states and billions of Naira worth of beer and other alcoholic beverages have been destroyed in Kano and other major Northern Nigeria cities over the years..
