The body of a 23-year-old woman, identified as Grace Godwin was found lifeless on Saturday morning along Abubakar Street, off Alex Ekwueme Way in Abuja’s Jabi district, in what authorities suspect to be the latest case of a deadly “one-chance” robbery.
The incident occurred just days after a similar attack claimed the life of a lady , an official at the Ghanian Commission in the nation’s capital. This frightening reality has heightened the fears of residents over growing insecurity.
Godwin, a fuel attendant with Mobil Filling Station in Mabushi, Abuja, was reported to have boarded a commercial vehicle on Friday evening around 8:53 p.m. She never made it home.
According to reports, her abductors, believed to be members of a notorious “one-chance” gang, contacted her family and demanded a ransom of ₦1 million. However, she was found dead the following morning in the Jabi area of Abuja.
Her cruel fate has again sparked outrage and fear among residents.
The deceased hailed from Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State. Family members who identified her body described her as hardworking and peaceful.
Spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Our operatives visited the scene, evacuated the victim’s body to the National Hospital morgue, and have opened a full-scale investigation into the matter,” Adeh said.
She added that the Command was intensifying efforts to dismantle “one-chance” syndicates operating across the territory and urged residents to avoid unregistered or suspicious commercial vehicles, especially at night.
The tragedy has reignited public concerns over the alarming spate of killings and general insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.
Civil society organisations and worried residents are demanding more proactive policing, especially in vulnerable areas. With similar attacks becoming disturbingly frequent, critics argue that the police must move beyond routine responses and take decisive action before the situation spirals further out of control.
