At the 2016 edition of the annual Hall Week of Moremi Hostel, University of
Lagos (UNILAG), the internationally acknowledged Woman of Courage and
prominent activist, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin was specially honored.

Among the queue of educating, social, entrepreneurial and motivational
programs, the Moremi Hall had hosted a public speaking and inter-hostel
debating competition. The competition showcased intellectuals among
students, who debated on spontaneously assigned topics at the hall week
event on Monday.

As an interesting addition, the event included a special recognition
session for the prominent activist, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, who was
presented with Amazon of The Year Award. The award, organizers of the event
said, was to recognize the role of a prominent woman who has defended the
precious gender against abuse and vulnerability over the years and also
consistently stood as model for younger male and females to emulate.

Presenting the award to Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, the Moremi Hall Mistress,
Prof. Virgy Onyene appraised the awardee’s commitment to the development of
younger male and females. She commended Dr. Okei-Odumakin for identifying
with students as well as leading an awareness rally tagged “Silence Not
Golden” on the campus, which amplified the voices of students in UNILAG
against abuses.

In her response as the recipient of Amazon of the Year Award, Dr. Joe
Okei-Odumakin commended the participants in the public speaking
competition. She said she had been moved by the display of intellects by
the participants, while also offering prizes to the first, second and third
winner in acknowledgment of their exemplary performances.

She appreciated the organizers for putting up such programs that challenge
students to explore their potentials. Dr. Okei-Odumakin accepted the award,
while also telling some high points of her story to inspire the students,
never to give up on their dreams but to remain steadfast in their visions.
