The ancient town of Ibadan was a beehive of activities on Sunday as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, conferred the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, drawing ministers, senators and other top political figures to the historic palace ceremony.
The colourful traditional event, held at the Alaafin’s palace, attracted a large gathering of political leaders, traditional rulers, captains of industry and cultural enthusiasts from across the country.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were several serving ministers, senators, members of the House of Representatives, governors, former governors and top officials of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Prominent Yoruba monarchs and high chiefs were also present to witness the historic occasion.
While conferring the title, Oba Owoade described Seyi Tinubu as a young leader committed to youth empowerment, social development and the promotion of Yoruba values.
He explained that the title of Okanlomo, traditionally reserved for individuals regarded as defenders and promoters of Yoruba heritage, was bestowed in recognition of his contributions to society and engagement with young people across the region.
The Alaafin noted that the honour comes with responsibility, urging the new Okanlomo to uphold integrity, humility and selfless service to the Yoruba people.
In his acceptance remarks, Seyi Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Alaafin and the people of Oyo for the honour, describing it as a call to greater service. He pledged to continue supporting initiatives focused on youth development, unity and the preservation of Yoruba culture.
“I accept this title with humility and a deep sense of responsibility to serve our people and promote peace and progress across Yorubaland,” he said.
The ceremony featured traditional rites, royal chants, drumming and cultural performances, adding colour and grandeur to the occasion. Special prayers were offered for the Alaafin, the Tinubu family and the continued peace and prosperity of Oyo, Yorubaland and Nigeria.
The ministers, senators and other dignitaries present , paid homage to the Alaafin, as Seyi Tinubu was formally presented in traditional regalia as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland.
