Justice Rilwanu Aikawa of the Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned the hearing of the bail application filed by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, ordering that he remain in custody until April 14 when the matter will resume.
“The matter is hereby adjourned to April 14, 2026, for the hearing of the bail application,” Justice Aikawa said after listening to arguments from both sides.
The trial judge adjourned the case on Wednesday after taking submissions from counsel to both the defence and the prosecution.
El-Rufai is facing a 10-count charge brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), bordering on the alleged conversion of public assets and money laundering.
“We urge the court to grant the application on liberal terms as the defendant is ready to stand trial,” defence counsel  said during proceedings.
The prosecution, however, opposed the request, arguing that the charges were serious and required caution.
“The charges are serious and involve the alleged conversion of public funds,” the prosecution submitted.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him.
The court subsequently ordered that the former governor remain in ICPC custody pending the hearing and determination of his bail application on the adjourned date.
“The defendant shall remain in the custody of the ICPC pending the determination of his bail application,” the judge ruled.
The former governor arrived at the court premises at about 9:00 a.m. in a black Hilux vehicle, accompanied by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Clad in a light brown riga and matching cap, he maintained a calm demeanour as he walked into the courtroom.
Addressing journalists after the proceedings, Ubong Akpan (SAN), a member of his legal team, confirmed the adjournment.
“We acknowledge the adjournment; the lead counsel will address the media soon.” he said.
