Argentina captain Lionel Messi has spoken publicly for the first time since his side’s heartbreaking defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, admitting that the pain of losing to Spain “is immense” and will take time to overcome.
The football icon shared an emotional message on Instagram on Monday, less than 24 hours after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to win the World Cup and end La Albiceleste’s reign as world champions.
Still processing the defeat, the 39-year-old reflected on the heartbreak of falling short in Argentina’s bid to become the first nation in more than six decades to successfully defend the World Cup title.
“The pain is immense and it’s going to take a long time for this wound to heal,” Messi wrote.
Despite the disappointment, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said he was proud of his teammates and grateful to the millions of Argentines who rallied behind the national team throughout the tournament.
“But I also hold on to all the good memories. The matches we turned around by giving everything we had, the moments that will remain in our memories forever, and the support of an entire country that, together with the work and effort of this group, brought us back among the best teams in the world.”
Messi acknowledged that the anguish of defeat had made it difficult to fully appreciate Argentina’s achievement of reaching a second consecutive World Cup final.
“Today it’s hard to appreciate what we achieved, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals,” he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to Argentine supporters for their unwavering backing during the tournament.
“Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and every message. Once again, we managed to unite as a country and be together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentine.”
In a gesture of sportsmanship, Messi congratulated Spain on their victory.
“I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship,” he added.
The defeat marked the second World Cup final loss of Messi’s career, following Argentina’s extra-time defeat to Germany in the 2014 final in Brazil. However, he fulfilled his lifelong ambition eight years later by captaining Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.
Although Argentina fell short of retaining the trophy, Lionel Scaloni’s side once again demonstrated why they remain among world football’s elite, defeating Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England before narrowly losing to a disciplined Spanish side, whose victory was sealed by Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner.
Messi also enjoyed another outstanding tournament, finishing with eight goals and four assists to cap yet another influential World Cup campaign.
Whether Sunday’s final was Messi’s last appearance on football’s biggest stage remains unclear. The Argentine legend made no announcement about his international future, but his emotional reaction after the final whistle and subsequent message have fuelled speculation that one of the sport’s greatest World Cup careers may have reached its conclusion.
Whatever decision he ultimately makes, Messi’s latest World Cup journey ended not with the fairytale ending Argentina had hoped for, but with a heartfelt reminder of the emotional weight the tournament carries—even for a player whose place among football’s greatest has long been secure.
