A 23-year-old motorcyclist, Yahaya Mohammed, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for resisting arrest and assaulting policemen.
The accused, of no fixed address, is facing a four-count charge bordering on resisting arrest and assaulting policemen.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Ihiehie Lucky, told the court that the accused and others at large on September 29 obstructed some policemen from performing their duties and beat them up.
Lucky, who recalled that the incident happened at 11:00 a.m. at Mile 12 area of Lagos, said: “On that day, Inspector Adegboyega Adegbemi, head of the crack squad, Ketu Police Station, led his team of policemen to Mile 12 underbridge after they received a call that some cyclists were contravening traffic law.
“When they got there, they were able to arrest some of them with their motorcycles. The policemen were ambushed on their way back to the station. Some boys blocked the road, prevented them from moving and attacked them, taking away the motorcycle.
“The policemen tried to escape but they were held captive and were beaten with all kinds of weapons. They tried to make a call for re-enforcement but they were outnumbered and the policemen could not even talk.
“A Samaritan came to their rescue and took them to a nearby mosque. From there, they made a call for re-enforcement and three of the boys were arrested, two of them escaped, leaving the accused behind.”
The prosecutor said that Adegboyega and one other policeman were hospitalised.
Lucky also said the victims’ phone, wrist watch and wallet containing identification cards, ATM cards and some valuable documents were stolen.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs Sule Amzat, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum each.
She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed while their addresses must be verified by the court.
Amzat adjourned the case till November 11.
