Impeachment Plot: Imo Lawmakers Shun Plenary

by Our Reporter

As rumours of the plot to oust the Speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly, Chief Benjamin Uwajumogu continue to make the rounds, members of the House have resorted to avoiding plenary sessions.

Pointblanknews.com gathered that the lawmakers boycotted sittings last week in a bid to warn the Speaker whom they accused of starving them while enjoying with himself with the governor.

A source hinted that since last week, the deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Iheanacho Ihim has been going round appealing to members to stop down the impeachment move, but to no avail.

Pointblanknews.com further gathered that the relationship between the Uwajumogu and his colleagues turned frosty following reports alleging that the Speaker has built hotels in Lagos and Owerri, including renovating the one at Umuahia, Abia state which he is said to have built before emerging Speaker.

The Speaker has been deceiving us, telling us to tighten our belts because we are in a rescue mission. I don’t think he will survive this move. He has to pay for his many sins, one of the pro impeachment lawmakers threatened.

Another who preferred anonymity also accused the Speaker of playing divide and rule politics among members of the House.

Most members who were elected on the APGA platform have accused the Speaker of eating alone; as he allegedly patronizes that belong to his clique at the House.

Pointblanknews.com checks revealed that this would be the third effort to remove Uwajumogu since he emerged Speaker.

Recall that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dragged Uwajumogu representing Ihitte Uboma State Constituency to court for dumping the party for the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) to emerge Speaker.

Again, Gov. Rochas Okorocha is said to be unhappy with the Speaker for swearing- in the Member- elect for Oguta State Constituency, Chief Eugene Dibiagwu of the PDP, whom the governor allegedly did not want to be sworn in. Uwajumogu was said to have caved in and sworn in Dibiagwu after the state chapter of the PDP mobilize support and threatened mayhem; amidst several delays by the House allegedly on the strength of a court injunction.

In the meantime, some other members like Hon. Ikenna Emeh are said to have joined Ihim to sue for peace among the members. How well the Speaker survives this plot, would be on his ability to reach his colleague or even get a helping hand from the governor.

As at press time, efforts to get the reaction of Okorocha’s spokesman on the development failed to yield fruit as he failed to pick his calls.
