A group, Combined Professionals of the APC is demanding that the Senate President Ahmed Lawal be presented as the consensus presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections.
About 25 aspirants are scheduled to face the APC’s adhoc delegates as from 29th of May to decide who leads the party to the presidential context but uptill now, the aspirants have not been screened.
It is believed that the party leadership may have decided to adopt a consensus option to elect its flagbearer but the Combined Professionals of the APC are demanding that the Senate President be adopted as the consensus candidate.
In a statement by the group which Pointblanknews.com has a copy, said
Ahmed Lawal’s dexterity to bring to fore a united and widespread government has drawn vivid and leading opinion poll in his favour with majority of Nigerians grasping for a consensus candidacy in his person to douse the seemingly rising tension albeit dust being raised by the multitudes of contestants in the race.
“Reflecting on the just concluded National working committee elections of the APC where the use of consensus whittled down any resulting or expected discontent and implosion, it will be ideal and realistic to have same replicated in the presidential primaries billed for the weekend. The consensus will only affirm the lead already attained by the Senate president Ahmed Lawal and place the ruling party on the pedestrian lane of success in the general elections for February 2023.
It is evident that Senate President Ahmed Lawal has a widespread acceptability in the country with various stakeholders rooting for his confirmation through a consensus exercise. The viability of achieving this stems from the ruling party setting her eyes on a focused and rancour free presidential primaries that will spring up a winner and naturally align the rest of the contenders to file behind him for a united front for the February electoral exercise.
“Ahmed Lawal has the capacity and clout of bringing all the other presidential participants together upon being announced the consensus candidate. With savvy and exceptional politicians like Chief Whip Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and a host of serving, former governors, members of the NASS, top business and opinion leaders in Nigeria and the diaspora, professional leaders in the diaspora and above all the teeming youths of Nigeria all supporting his bid for the office of the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, It will be wise and strategic for the ruling party to utilize the consensus option and affirm his candidature in a few days time.
“President Mohammadu Buhari has the moral need to put his weight behind the consensus option and replicate the steady, firm, and focused experience that was made during the NWC party convention in the coming weekend. He needs to listen to the feeling and aspirations of Nigerians home and abroad, and jettison that of those that seek for his retirement and dissolution of his legacy and policies and support the emergence of Senate President Ahmed Lawal.
“It will be a WIN-WIN for the ruling APC and the Nigerian masses having a seasoned politician and people’s choice in the person of Senate President Ahmed Lawal chosen through consensus in the coming Presidential primaries election and usher in a united party for the general elections in a few months time. Lets do the right move and stay the course to retaining power in 2023.”
