At Last, FIFA Approves Goal Line Technology

by Our Reporter

After several years of agitations by players, pundits and stakeholders, World soccer governing body, FIFA, has finally approved  goal line technology.

The technology involves the use of video camera replay, like in tennis, which will eliminate controversies over wether the ball crossed the line.

At its meeting in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday, the Executive Committee members of FIFA debated and voted for the introduction of goal line technology.

Indications to the latest development came from FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, during the recently concluded Euro 2012 Championship when an obvious goal by Ukraine against England was not accepted by the referee.

Blatter, who had in the past voiced against the introduction of goal line technology, was forced to have a rethink as the disallowed goal ensured Ukraine’s early exit from the championship.

Frank Lampard’s obvious goal against Germany during the South Africa 2010 was not accepted as the centre referee could not see that the ball actually crossed the goal line.
