The network provider, MTN Nigeria (MTNN) Communications Plc has distanced itself from the restriction placed on an online media platform, Peoples Gazette.
The network provider however stated that the restriction was as a result of the directive from the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) in line with both the provisions of section 146 of the Nigeria Communications Act, 2003.
In letter sighted by Pointblanknews.com, dated December 1 and signed by Osarieme Anita Omonuwa, Advisor Commercial Legal and Festus Ukomadu, Manager Commercial Legal, MTNN advised the operators of the site to engage with NCC for the speedy resolution of all contentious issues that led to the restriction.
“We acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 29 October 2021 requesting MTN Nigeria Communications Plc (“MTNN”) to lift the restrictions barring the website of Peoples Gazette www.peopleszazefre.com from gaining access on the MTNN network.
“Please be advised that the network access restriction for is pursuant to the directives of the Nigerian Communications Commission (“Commission”) dated 26 January 2021. As a responsible corporate organization, MTN complied with the said directive in line with both the provisions of section 146 of the Nigeria Communications Act, 2003 and the applicable terms and conditions of MTNN’s operating licenses.
“While MT NN empathizes with the owners and management of the Peoples Gazette, it would be unable to unilaterally reverse or lift the restriction except by the directives of the Commission. MT NN therefore advise that the management of the Peoples Gazette should engage with the Commission for a resolution of this issue and issuance of the directives to reverse the restriction.
“MTNN appreciates the opportunity to provide clarification on this issue.” The letter said.
