Buoyed by the lingering internal squabbles in the opposition Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, former President Olusegun Obasanjo met with
factional National Chairman of the Party, Senator Ali Modu Sherrif.
The closed door meeting held at the instance of President Obasanjo at his
Abeokuta residence was aimed at persuading the former Borno Governor to
give peace a chance in the once ruling party, a source told
Pointblanknews.com.
President Obasanjo was elected President under the platform of the PDP. He
left the party ahead of the 2015 elections and tore his membership card.
Upon leaving the PDP, Obasanjo romanced with All Progressive Congress,
APC, leadership and backed the candidacy of President Mohammadu Buhari.
Since the defeat of PDP at the 2015 elections, the party has been
fragmented and have basically left without direction, paving the way of a
near one party state.
However, Sheriff who arrived Obasanjo’s residence at 11:04 in four
vehicles convoy went straight to Obasanjo’s inner room for a closed door
meeting which lasted for one hour.
The security operatives attached to Obasanjo’s residence allowed only the
SUV that carried Sheriff into the premises while other vehicles were asked
to park outside the residence.
Sheriff and National Chairman caretaker committee Senator Ahmed Makarfi
have been dragging the leadership of the party with each other.
Although details of the meeting have not been made public but sources
confirmed to Pointblanknews.com that that Sheriff might shift some grounds
to allow the PDP elect substantive leadership and move on ahead of the
2019 elections.
