By a consensus arrangement, former Edo State Governor, John Odigie Oyegun, has been selected as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress.
Chief Tom Ikimi, a National leader of the APC and former Minister for Foreign Affairs during the military junta of Late General Sanni Abacha, was persuaded to step down.
Chief Oyegun, who is highly favored by former Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu of Lagos State, for the APC top job, was the governor of Edo State during the ill-fated Third Republic in 1993, before maximum ruler, Sanni Abacha, scuttled the budding journey to democratic rule on November 17, 1993.
His selection as the APC chairman took place at the maiden National Convention of the party at Eagle Square, Abuja, in the early hours of
Saturday.
Other national officers of the party equally emerged at the party’s nconvention.
APC Governors had initially supported a voting option in their move to have Ikimi emerge using their numerical strength but that move was scuttled by the leadership of the party led by Tinubu.
Oyegun is expected to lead APC through the 2015 general elections.
