A Kubwa Grade 1 Magistrate Court in Abuja on Friday granted bail to
detained PremiumTimes’ reporter, Samuel Ogundipe.
Presiding judge Abdulwahab Mohammed granted the bail in the sum of
N500,000 and a surety who must be resident withing the court’s
jurisdiction.
The police want Mr Ogundipe to disclose his source for a story published
by PREMIUM TIMES and other news media.
The story revealed a preliminary report written by the Inspector General
of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on last week’s
siege to the National Assembly by security officials.
Many in Nigeria believe that surveillance is corroding media freedom and
due process damaging the Nigeria public’s ability to make government
accountable.
“It should be noted that confidentiality of sources is necessary for good
journalism to flourish and journalists should not be coerced into
revealing such sources, the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ said
