The FCT Police Command has arrested Zayyanu Halilu for allegedly sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl inside a vehicle at the Airport Bridge Taxi Park in Abuja.
The girl was reportedly found to be about three months pregnant following a medical examination conducted after she was rescued by police operatives.
Halilu was arrested on October 2 by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, who were on routine patrol in the area when they noticed a navy blue Volkswagen, with registration number KMC567LQ, parked at the taxi park.
According to the police, the officers became suspicious after observing that the vehicle was shaking and approached it to investigate.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, saying the officers opened the vehicle and allegedly found Halilu sexually abusing the minor.
“However, the vehicle was shaking. The officers, suspecting foul play, approached the vehicle and opened it, only to see one Zayyanu Halilu raping a twelve (12) year old minor,” the statement said.
The suspect was immediately arrested while the girl was rescued, the police said.
Preliminary investigations, according to the command, revealed that Halilu had allegedly lured and sexually abused the victim several times in the same vehicle at the location.
The police alleged that the suspect had threatened to “deal with her” if she disclosed the abuse to anyone.
A medical examination subsequently conducted on the victim revealed that she was about three months pregnant, according to the statement.
“The victim is currently receiving medical care and assessment, while the suspect remains in Police custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations,” the police said.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and pay close attention to the whereabouts, safety and welfare of their children and wards.
The command also urged members of the public to report suspicious activities or persons to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines.
The suspect remains in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations and his possible arraignment in court.
