Hajiya Amina Sambo, wife of Vice-President Namadi Sambo, has donated 130 sewing machines to 250 brides who will get married on Sunday in Kano.
Malam Aminuddeen Abukakar, Chairman of the Kano State Hisba Board, announced the donation during the presentation of essential items to the couples in Kano on Saturday.
He said the sewing machines would be given out to the brides during a planned group marriage ceremony by the Hisba Board on Sunday.
The board chairman said a Kano-based businessman, Alhaji Isiyaka Rabi’u, and two of his sons, had also paid the dowries for the 250 brides.
He said the dowry payment was their contribution to the success of the programme.
Abukakar said Airtel, a telecommunications company, also donated 500 GSM telephone handsets and their SIM cards to the couples.
He praised the generosity of all those who contributed to the success of the programme.
In her remarks, Hajiya Sambo commended the state government for initiating the programme.
“The idea behind marrying off divorcees and widows will go a long way in checking social vices and prostitution in the society,’’ she said.
The Vice-President’s wife urged other state governments to borrow a leaf from Kano state.
She also appealed to the new couples to fear God and avoid acts capable of truncating the relationship.(NAN)
