Boko Haram releases UN staff, 9 others

The Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP, has freed Abubakar Garba-Idris, a senior Protection Assistant with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UNHCR, who was kidnapped on the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.

According to humanitarian sources, Mr Idris, also known as Alooma, is currently undergoing medical and military checks with troops from Operation Hadin Kai in Maiduguri before being released to his family.

According to the source, a businessman, Muazu Bawa, who was kidnapped on the same day, was also released, along with eight other captives who were all being debriefed by the military.

Abubakar Baba-Shehu, Executive Director of the Yobe State Network of Civil Society, who also confirmed the release, said he hoped for more captives to be released and said, “it’s a cheering news.”
