Cleric Backs Removal Of Immunity Clause From Constitution

by Our Reporter

A cleric, Rev. Yinka Adedokun, of Holy Ghost Harvest Church, Ilorin, on Monday called for the removal of the immunity clause from the Nigerian Constitution to tackle corruption.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin that the removal would make leaders more responsible and responsive to the citizenry.

“The removal will no doubt make our leaders more responsible and responsive to the yearnings of the people, just as it has the capacity to strengthen our democracy.

“The current practice encourages corruption and flagrant disregard for the wishes of the people.

“The fear that it will cause distraction is unnecessary, instead it will bring about accountability and probity in governance,” he said.

He appealed to the National Assembly to consider the interests of Nigeria above other considerations in fashioning out a constitution that would be acceptable to all.

“The National Assembly should consider the interests of Nigerians and give them utmost attention.
“This is in order to have a new constitution that will be acceptable to Nigerians and ensure peace and stability,” he said.

Adedokun, however, urged Nigerians to pray for the leaders and the peace of the nation in 2013.
