The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched a campaign against electoral impunity in Nigeria from 2003 general elections till date.

The commission said it hoped to do this through an initiative that will help it identify culprits and begin a process of prosecuting them.

The Chairman of the commission, Chidi Odinkalu, told a news conference in Abuja that the NHRC with the support of Ford Foundation research project will reveal culprits in three months.

Over the years, the nation has witnessed elections characterised by fraud and impunity. Several groups have called for ways of curbing the impunity that is prevalent in Nigerian elections.

In the first phase of the initiative to identify those indicted for electoral impunity, six members of a technical working group drawn from the geo-political zones will come up with an interim report that will be presented to the public. The NHRC vows that all those identified will be prosecuted.

According to the commission, naming people indicted or increasing the number of judges handling election petitions is not the only solution.

Political parties have argued that bad lawyers are also responsible for increasing numbers of people who steal the people’s votes with impunity.
