Egypt: Al Jazeera journalists to spend 7 years in jail

by Our Reporter
An Egyptian Court on Monday morning sentenced three Al Jazeera journalists to jail.
The court found Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy, and Baher Mohamed guilty of reporting false news and associating with the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
Aljazeera had denied the allegations and the world has accused Egyptian authorities of simply clamping down on media freedom.
The twitter hashtag #Free‎AJStaff has been used globally  to demand the release of the journalists who have been held since December, 2013.

Egypt’s security forces last December arrested four Al Jazeera journalists in Cairo.

Correspondent Peter Greste, producers Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed as well as cameraman Mohamed Fawzy were held in custody after arrested by security forces

Greste is a veteran journalist who previously worked for Reuters, CNN and the BBC over the past two decades.

Human rights groups had said conditions for journalists in Egypt have become difficult since former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi was removed in a coup on July 3, 2013.

The  arrests came after a series of clashes between police and Muslim Brotherhood supporters across Egypt.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said on Monday that Egypt, Syria and Iraq have become among the deadliest countries for journalists to work in.
