The dispute between the Federal Capital Territory Development Control Department and the Abuja Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has been resolved, a council official said.
The Secretary of the Council, Mr Emmanuel Ogbeche, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday that an agreement would soon be reached to compensate the union.
The Development Control Department, had on Friday, demolished the relaxation centre and some other structures within the NUJ premises, saying they are illegal.
The incident sparked off a free for all between the union members and the FCTA official.
Ogbeche said that the details of the agreement and the manner of compensation would be disclosed after a meeting of the representatives of both parties.
The secretary said that the union had demanded for compensation for the damages on its structures as well as the property that were destroyed.
He said that a top official from the FCTA had apologised on behalf of the Development Control Department and that arrangements had reached advanced stage to compensate the union.
He said that stakeholders in the matter had also visited the union to ascertain the extent of damage.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Electoral Committee for the forthcoming elections into the council, Mr Joseph Nwankwo, said that arrangements had been concluded for the elections scheduled to hold on Saturday.
He said that the provisional list of the candidates for the various positions had been released.
Nwankwo said that the list comprised four candidates for the chairmanship position and two each for the posts of secretary and assistant secretary.
He, however, said that the candidates for the posts treasurer and the financial secretary were returned unopposed.
The chairman said that the proceedings would be monitored by a delegation from the National Secretariat of the NUJ on Saturday.
He said that security arrangements, as well as logistics needed for the smooth conduct of the polls had been concluded.
The chairman of the electoral committee assured stakeholders that the recent dispute between the union and the development control department would not affect the conduct of the elections. (NAN)
