The Minister of State for Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, said on Tuesday that the Federal Government had completed 51 of the 89 Almajiri schools across the country.
Speaking during the 11th Quarterly Meeting of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in Minna, the minister said that the schools had been handed over to the benefiting state governments.
Wike, represented by the Acting Executive Secretary of UBEC, Prof. Charles Onocha, said that arrangements had been concluded for the inauguration of the schools by Vice-President Namadi Sambo.
He said the state governments would ensure the running and maintenance of the schools and their subsequent expansion.
The minister also said that the state governments would be responsible for the recruitment of teachers and their training to meet the needs of the pupils.
“The state governments will ensure adequate provision of facilities to the schools, especially in the provision of stable water supply and electricity.
“They are to conduct enrolment of Almajiris among the Tsangayas in the various communities as well as ensure sustainable feeding of the pupils,“ the minister said.
He said work would soon commence on the Special Basic and Vocational Education Schools for out-of-school children in the South-East and South-South geo-political zones. (NAN)
