JAMB Has No Power To Conduct Admissions – ASUU

by Our Reporter
The national president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has declared that the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has no authority to administer admissions into higher education institutions across the country.
The empowerment of JAMB to handle admissions to higher institutions, according to Osodeke, was an infringement on universities’ autonomy.

He said that each university senate was in charge of overseeing all academic concerns at the university, including establishing entrance rules and approving undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

JAMB’s job, according to Osodeke, is to administer matriculation examinations for admission into a Nigerian higher institution, designate examiners, and collect/disseminate information on all topics pertaining to entrance tests.

He slammed JAMB for operating outside of its authority by controlling activities in Nigerian institutions, saying it jeopardized university autonomy.

He urged JAMB to stick to its basic mandate and let universities make decisions about admission policies and procedures.
