The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has refuted claims that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, suffered a nosebleed while in detention, describing the report as entirely false and misleading.
In a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday, the Commission said the former governor is in stable condition and continues to receive appropriate medical attention while in custody. It dismissed the alleged health scare as unfounded and urged the public to disregard what it called speculative reports.
The anti-corruption agency stated that El-Rufai’s detention is connected to an ongoing investigation into allegations within its mandate, stressing that the action is procedural and not punitive. It explained that his continued stay in custody is to enable investigators conclude inquiries without interference.
According to the Commission, due process is being strictly observed, and the former governor has been cooperating with investigators as the probe progresses.
“The attention of the Commission has been drawn to reports alleging that the former governor suffered a nosebleed in detention. The claim is untrue. He is in good health and receiving appropriate care,” the statement read.
The clarification follows recent concerns raised by El-Rufai’s media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, who had alleged that his principal was experiencing a bleeding nose while in custody and was not receiving adequate medical attention.
Adekeye, in raising the alarm, described the situation as worrisome and called for urgent intervention.
However, with the ICPC’s categorical denial of any such health incident, attention has now shifted to whether the former governor’s camp will respond to the Commission’s rebuttal.
The Commission maintained that it acted within its statutory powers in keeping the former governor in custody, emphasising that the measure is temporary and subject to the outcome of its investigation.
It added that once investigations are concluded, appropriate legal steps would be taken in line with the law.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail El-Rufai’s detention, with some political associates and supporters calling for his immediate release, while others have urged the Commission to ensure transparency and fairness in its handling of the matter.
El-Rufai is currently being investigated over alleged financial improprieties during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
The ICPC assured Nigerians that it remains committed to upholding the rule of law and will provide updates as developments unfold.
