The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has raised the alarm over alleged gun attacks on its consultative meetings in Calabar South Local Government Area, leaving three people injured and several vehicles damaged.
The party said the incidents occurred on Friday during its consultative engagements, alleging that suspected hoodlums disrupted the meetings and opened fire at locations where party members had gathered.
The PDP described the incidents as disturbing, particularly as political parties intensify consultations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It called on security agencies to investigate the incidents, identify those responsible and ensure that political activities in the state are conducted in a peaceful environment.
Reacting to the development, the party warned that continued disruption of its political activities could have serious consequences for law and order.
“Let the party not be held accountable when such disruptions lead to a total breakdown of law and order,” the party said.
In a separate statement, the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Mike Ojisi, described the incidents as “disturbing attacks” on the party’s consultative engagements.
Ojisi said the matter had been reported to the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Geoffrey, and urged security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.
Meanwhile, the police said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents.
“The Command is verifying the circumstances surrounding the incidents, including reports of gunfire, injuries and damage to property,” the police said.
The Command advised residents to remain calm, avoid affected areas where necessary and refrain from circulating unverified information.
The PDP urged its members and supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding, while calling on political actors and security agencies to take steps to prevent a recurrence.
The party also appealed for an environment where citizens can participate freely in political activities without fear or intimidation.
