Terrorism: Kano Slams Ban on Okada

by Our Reporter

It is hard times for millions of commercial motorcyclists in Kano as Kano state government on Tuesday placed a ban on them beginning from Thursday.

In a state broadcast by the state acting governor, Engr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, he stated that the action became necessary so as to curb the incessant menace of terrorists using motor bikes.

The acting governor also urged all motorcycle owners to go back to their Local Government Areas for proper registration of their motorbikes, saying that the measure was necessary for security purposes.

Ganduje further announced that as from Thursday, January 24, motorcyclists, both private and commercial would be banned from carrying passenger, both within the Kano metropolis and the Local Government Areas.

This action by the state government became necessary in order to secure the state from the unnecessary security challenges that it has witnessed for sometime now.

We will also ensure that every motorcycle is duly registered so as to ensure the safety of the owner and the security of the state. And we are also calling on the motorcyclists—both private and commercial to go their respective Local Government Areas and register.

This action by the state government became necessary following a series of security reports on the situation in the state, and after consultations, coupled with the commercial viability of the state.

The government now deems it right that as from Thursday, motorcyclists would be stopped from carrying passengers within the metropolis and the Local Government Areas.

This action may not be unconnected with the spate of terrorism and attacks being perpetrated by gun men, using motorbikes in the state, the latest being last Saturday’s attack on the life of the Emir of Kano and his two sons, which claimed at least six lives.
