Nigeria’s national football team defender, William Troost-Ekong, has announced his resignation from the Super Eagles, bringing an end to a distinguished international career.
Renowned football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Wednesday, revealing that the experienced centre-back has decided not to represent Nigeria again.
However, it remains unclear whether Troost-Ekong has completely quit football or if the decision applies strictly to his international career with the Super Eagles.
No official statement has been released by the player to clarify whether he will continue at club level.
Troost-Ekong bows out having earned 83 caps for the Super Eagles, making him one of Nigeria’s most capped defenders in recent history. During his international career, he featured in five major tournaments and won three medals with the national team, cementing his status as a key figure in Nigeria’s defensive line over the years.
The former Watford and Udinese defender also captained the national team at various times and played a leadership role both on and off the pitch, particularly during Nigeria’s recent Africa Cup of Nations campaigns.
Although further details surrounding the decision are still expected, sources close to the situation suggest the choice was made after careful consideration, marking the end of an era in Nigeria’s defensive setup.
Troost-Ekong’s resignation is expected to open the door for younger defenders to stake a claim in the national team as Nigeria begin to refresh the squad ahead of future competitions.
The Nigeria Football Federation is yet to issue an official statement on the development.
