US President Donald Trump has ordered American flags across the United States to be flown at half-staff for one week in honour of legendary country music star Dolly Parton, who died on Tuesday at the age of 80.
Trump announced the directive in a statement mourning Parton, describing her as “one of the greatest Country singers” and saying her death was “a true loss for millions of people.”
The flags were ordered to be lowered from 6 p.m. Tuesday and remain at half-staff for one week.
“There has never been anyone like her, and never will,” Trump said.
The presidential tribute comes against the backdrop of Parton’s decision to twice decline offers from the Trump administration to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States.
Parton explained in 2021 that she could not accept the first offer because her husband was ill. She later declined a second opportunity, citing concerns about travelling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The singer had long maintained an image largely detached from partisan politics, choosing instead to focus on her music, philanthropy and connection with people across political and social divides.
Born into a poor family in rural Tennessee, Parton rose to become one of the most influential entertainers in American history during a career spanning more than six decades.
She wrote and recorded numerous internationally acclaimed songs, including Jolene, 9 to 5, I Will Always Love You and Coat of Many Colors. She also enjoyed a successful career as an actress and businesswoman.
Beyond entertainment, Parton became widely recognised for her philanthropic work. Her Imagination Library programme provides free books to children and has become one of her most enduring contributions to childhood literacy.
Trump, in his tribute, described Parton as “one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER.”
“This is a true loss for millions of people,” he said, before announcing the flag order.
“In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for a one week period beginning tonight at 6:00PM. Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”
Parton’s death has triggered tributes from political leaders, entertainers and admirers around the world.
Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist Inibehe Effiong also paid tribute to the singer, writing on X and Facebook: “Rest in peace Legend.”
Parton’s death marks the end of an extraordinary career in which music, acting and philanthropy combined to make her one of the most recognisable and enduring figures in American popular culture.
