New yam festival: Anambra bans group, individual celebration before traditional ruler

Anambra state government has insisted that no group of people or
individual shall hold Iwa Ji, Iri Ji or new yam festival by any name
before the traditional ruler of the community in the state.

“This guideline is to be strictly adhered  to and enforced”, the
Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr
Greg Obi said in a statement in Awka on Tuesday.

He said the improper activities/actions of some individuals in some
communities of the state if left unchecked can lead to breakdown of law
and order and breach of public peace.

The statement reads, ” the attention of the state government has been
drawn to the improper activities/actions of some individuals in some
communities if Anambra state which if left unchecked can lead to
breakdown of law and order and breach of public peace.

“In this regard it has been observed that some individuals hold new yam
festival in their community before the traditional ruler in violation of
customs and tradition of our people.

Effective immediately the government directs that no individual or group
of people shall hold new yam festival by any name before the traditional
ruler of the community,”. Obi said.
