Anambra female governor, Dame Virgy Etiaba and the Acting Chief Judge of
Anambra, Justice Ijem Onwuamaegbu and others were honoured at this
year’s Mothers’ summit in Awka.
Others are former Minister, Women Affairs and Social Development, Iyom
Josephine Anenih and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs
Ifeoma Anagbogu.
Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra says women as `mothers’ are repository of
values and moral conscience of the society.
“There is no act of gratitude to mothers that can be considered too
much for them,” the governor said this while addressing the opening of
Mother’s Summit held at the Ekwueme Square, Awka.
“We are also paying close attention to women and gender issues. We are
giving women more responsibilities and pushing our mothers into
positions of trust.
“I have five women serving in my cabinet as commissioners and four as
Special Advisers.
“In all, we have nine women participating in the highest decision
making organ of Anambra State.
“I think we deserve applause! Even as the Acting Chief Judge of Anambra
State is also a woman. Umunwanyi Anambra, okwanu eziokwu? (Women of
Anambra, is that not true?)
“So, this should encourage our women to put in more efforts in remaking
our world. The government of Anambra State is proud of you,” Gov.
Obiano said.
Earlier, his wife, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano noted that this year’s event
would be veritable opportunity for women to showcase their various
talents.
She recalled that through her Non-governmental organisation, Caring
Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ), no fewer than 4,000 women had been
trained and empowered in various skills, to enable them to cater for
their individual and family responsibilities.
She said that CAFE also recorded excellent results by providing
prosthetic limps, built houses for no fewer than 26 widows and provided
restrooms in markets.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue commended wife of the
governor for her dedication in touching lives, especially widows and the
oppressed.
Mezue said that the present administration had changed the political
agenda of the state, directing its affairs toward attracting meaningful
projects that would project the state to limelight.
The event has a theme: “Promoting Gender Balance and Social Values”.
The event heralded presentation of awards to 18 women, who distinguished
themselves in various walks life
