A statement by the Director of Communications of the campaign, Mr Faruk Adejoh-Audu, said that the incident occurred about 4:00pm at Goshen Hotel, Ganaja Area of Lokoja, where his teeming supporters were to receive Ajaka while returning from his campaign in Kogi East.
Adejoh-Audu said that the suspect, Jerry Isaac, said to be from Bassa Local Government Area of the state, was arrested with two cartoons of bullet cartridges hidden among crates of minerals in a tricycle otherwise known as Keke NAPEP and pretended to be a delivery man supplying minerals to the hotel.
The statement further stated that when plain clothes policemen from the ‘C’ Division of the Kogi State Police Command manning the hotel stopped the suspect for a search, two other passengers of the tricycle suddenly jumped out and took to their heels, thereby raising suspicion of the officers, who held unto Isaac and the tricycle and later found the items concealed in cartoons of beers.
Adejoh-Audu further said that upon the discovery of the ammunition, the supporters waiting to receive Ajaka, attempted to lynch the suspect but were prevented by the security personnel.
The statement also stated that the suspect was later whisked away to the ‘C’ Division Police Station at 200 Units Housing Estate, Gadumo Lokoja, from where he was said to have been transferred to the police headquarters.
The Murtala Yakubu Ajaka Campaign Team had for weeks been sounding the alarm of alleged plots to plant incriminating evidence on its campaign train by the Governor Yahaya Bello-led Kogi State Government.
Adejoh-Audu therefore called on the Kogi State police Command to get to the roots of the matter and ensure thorough investigation with the view to identifying the sponsors
He vowed that the campaign team would exhaust every legal means to get to the root of the incident to prevent future occurrence.
Efforts by our correspondent to get the Police Public Relations officer of the Kogi police Command, ASP William Anya for comment on the incident were not successful as his cell phone was not reachable.
