The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has clarified that its Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, is not under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over any contract-related matter.
In a statement on Friday, Muntari Ibrahim, General Manager of Public Relations at NiMet, said, “The EFCC had requested contract documents awarded at NiMet dating back to 2021, long before Professor Anosike was appointed.”
He explained that the agency is fully cooperating with the EFCC’s request, which he described as part of the Commission’s routine operations involving several government institutions.
Professor Anosike was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December 2023. NiMet emphasised that the documents in question predate his administration.
NiMet said the clarification became necessary to assure stakeholders and the public of the agency’s integrity and commitment to transparency.
This development comes as public attention grows over past leadership at NiMet. Earlier this year, the Coalition to Save Education in Nigeria (COSEN) criticized anti-graft agencies for failing to act on corruption allegations against former DG, Prof. Sani Abubakar-Mashi.
Despite multiple petitions and what COSEN described as “tons of evidence,” no action has been taken against Mashi nearly four years after his removal. The group called on the EFCC and the ICPC to investigate the case without further delay.
